This is a case report of a patient who developed a subcapsular renal hematoma as a complication to SWL. The description is rather typical and is most certainly the unfortunate rupture of a capsule vessel. As shown in the report almost all patients with this complication can be managed conservatively.
It is not mentioned in the report if the stone was intact or not during ureteroscopy. Judging disintegration from CT-examinations early after SWL might be difficult. Accumulation of stone fragments held together might look like a solid stone. In the absence of obstruction it is occasionally possible to avoid ureteroscopy by a repeat CT.
