Basic research: A recent study provides evidence for the benefit of EMTT in healing bone fractures

A recent in vitro study by Gerdesmeyer et al. provides new findings from basic research relating to Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy (EMTT).1 The objective of the study was to determine the cell-stimulating effects of EMTT on bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and thereby draw conclusions regarding the benefit of EMTT in healing bone fractures.

The authors of the experimental study investigated the effect of EMTT on human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) by simulating a 10-minute outpatient treatment (three times per week) over a total period of two weeks. In order to evaluate the effect, cell viability, gene expression of bone regenerative factors and VEGF-A secretion were measured after 7 and 14 days of treatment.

Results and conclusions
Within the context of the applied tests, no negative or toxic effects of the high-energy electromagnetic pulses on the MSC cultures were observed in vitro. Among the various measurements, the VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) concentration determined by means of the VEGF ELISA test was the most significant: On day 7 of the treatment, the test showed a significantly higher VEGF concentration in the EMTT group treated with 80 mT versus the untreated control group. The authors believe that the increase in the proangiogenic factor VEGF in MSCs could play a significant role in the cell-stimulating effect of EMTT.

The results are classified as basic research. At present, it is not possible to draw any clinically relevant conclusions. The study authors suggest further in vitro and in vivo investigation of the specific stimulating and regenerative effects of EMTT pulses.

The study illustrates that there is scientific interest in researching EMTT for the treatment of bone fractures. On this basis, there could be clinical data for this indication in the future.
