Walter Augusto Scheitlin honoured with the »Christian Chaussy Award 2023«

On 22 September 2023, Walter Augusto Scheitlin from the Department of Urology and Paediatric Urology at SLK Kliniken in Heilbronn, Germany, was honoured with the prestigious »Christian Chaussy Award 2023« on behalf of the research group from the study »Use of Low-Intensity Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) in Wound Healing Management in case of Fournier's Gangrene*«. This recognition is bestowed by the German Society for Shock Wave Lithotripsy (DGSWL) for exceptional scientific contributions in the field of shock wave lithotripsy and therapy.

The award ceremony took place during the 75th Congress of the German Society of Urology (DGU) in Leipzig, as part of the DGSWL meeting.

Scheitlin not only presented the abstract, but also impressively underscored the scientific importance and relevance of the research work. As a result, the research group made an important contribution to the development and understanding of this complex medical field.

ESWT serves to enhance wound healing management in case of Fournier's gangrene and may even lead to complete renewal of skin tissue
Low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been successfully used to treat surgical wound healing disorders since 2007. The study by Scheitlin et al investigated the use of ESWT in wound healing management in case of Fournier's gangrene. A total of eight patients were treated in two centres. Following primary treatment with tissue excision, shock waves were applied three times a week to the wound margins. Treatment took place without anaesthesia. The results showed successful wound healing over 6 weeks in the first three patients who had received skin flap surgery. In the subsequent five patients, ESWT was applied directly to the open wound. Some patients required additional mesh graft coverage. In the remaining patients, complete healing with new tissue formed occurred within 8-12 weeks. The study concludes that ESWT enhances wound healing management in case of Fournier's gangrene and may even lead to complete renewal of skin tissue.

About the »Christian Chaussy Award«
The »Christian Chaussy Award« is named after Professor Dr Christian Chaussy. On 7 February 1980, he treated the first kidney stone patient worldwide successfully with Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany. Shortly after the first treatment, the new method was celebrated as a revolution. The German Society for Shock Wave Lithotripsy (DGSWL) has been organising the award since 2019. STORZ MEDICAL supports the award with a research grant of €2 500.
