Abstract

In the last forty years Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) has been an effective technique to treat kidney and ureteral stones. Nowadays, ESWL is still playing a role for stone treatment and it is a primary option in different guidelines. New technologies are available for endourologists, but this procedure still resists. This narrative review will shortly resume the history of ESWL, its clinical application, limits and specific uses.

This is a well done review on very individual historical details of ESWL and its current application. It is a surprise to see that five of the seven authors are from Italy where the reimbursement for ESWL is so low, that 25 % of all urological centers in Italy do not offer ESWL. See also review of Proietti S et al. Italian endourological panorama: results from a national survey. Cent European J Urol. 2018;71(2):190-195.
