The first stationary MODULITH® SLK »inline« in Australia

In December 2014 the first stationary MODULITH® SLK »inline« in Australia was installed at Casey Hospital in Berwick, a south-eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. Casey Hospital is part of the Monash Health network, the largest in Victoria. Services include an emergency department, general medical, mental health, rehabilitation, surgical and ambulatory care services. The hospital is a provider of paediatric services for Monash Children's Hospital and is a centre for the leading cardiac services of MonashHEART, too. Dr. Philip McCahy, Clinical Head Urologist at Casey Hospital, had a few words to say about last week's successful installation and dedication of STORZ MEDICAL's MODULITH® SLK »inline« – The smart solution of Lithotripsy.

MODULITH® SLK »inline« at Casey Hospital - Berwick, Victoria

»The last week has been a fun, fantastic example of interdisciplinary teamwork and I think everyone should be proud of their contribution. The installation has exceeded my (already high) expectations and I think the numbers speak for themselves:

  • 19 booked adult patients seen, 17 treated with only NSAIDS or low dose opiate (1 had passed the stones and another we could not visualise).

  • 2 booked GA children.

  • 4 emergencies seen, 2 treated with low dose opiates (one radiolucent stone at VUJ could not be visualised and another was over SI joint and could not be confidently seen).

SWL - Shock Wave Lithotripsy performed on children

As well as being the first SWL – Shock Wave Lithotripsy to be performed at Casey Hospital we can add in the first children to have lithotripsy at Monash/Southern Health, the first non-GA lithotripsy and possibly the first in-situ lithotripsy for acute ureteric stones in Victoria/Australia. We can safely say that a number of patients will avoid any invasive surgery and anaesthesia, and that at least 2 patients will, hopefully, avoid ureteric stents and multiple procedures.

Thanks for everyone's support over the 5 years of dreaming and we will develop the best stone unit in the country.«
