Everything that you would like to know as a patient

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy (EMTT). If you have any specific concerns, please speak to the doctor treating you.

For whom is EMTT suitable?

EMTT can be used for adults with musculoskeletal complaints, such as arthrosis, back pain or specific sports injuries. A doctor will assess in consultation with you whether therapy is a suitable option for you.

Who should not be treated?

EMTT must not be used on:

  • Pregnant women
  • Persons with pacemakers or other implanted electronic systems

Careful medical assessment is required in the case of certain conditions, such as tumours in the treatment area, and for children and adolescents.

What do I need to do before the treatment?

As magnetic pulses will be generated during the treatment, electronic devices, credit cards and other magnetically sensitive objects should be removed from the immediate area for treatment.

Please inform your doctor in particular regarding:

  • Tattoos or permanent make-up in the treatment area (this may result in mild heating)
  • Metallic clothing, such as fabrics incorporating metal fibres
  • Jewellery, watches, belts, spectacles or other metallic objects – these should be taken off before the treatment

How does the treatment feel?

EMTT has generally been described as well-tolerated. Some patients report a mild throbbing or tingling during the treatment. These sensations are normal and only occur while magnetic pulses are being applied. Should the application feel uncomfortable, the intensity can be adjusted or treatment can be interrupted.

Can the treatment cause side effects?

Isolated cases of mild redness or pain during treatment have been described. These were generally temporary and subsided within 24 hours. Particular caution is recommended in the case of limited ability to feel pain, such as with neuropathy.

Does the tissue heat up during the treatment?

No, EMTT is gentle on the tissue and the skin. The pulses are so short that they do not cause any noteworthy level of heating.

How many sessions are required?

A treatment cycle usually comprises multiple sessions, often 4 to 8 applications within a few weeks. A session generally lasts between 5 and 20 minutes. The exact number of sessions is determined according to an individual’s needs.

Does the health insurance company cover the costs?

The statutory health insurance companies in Switzerland and Germany generally do not cover the costs of EMTT. The treatment is therefore usually performed on the basis of payment by the insured person themselves. Costs may vary by region and institution.

Are there any safety margins that must be observed?

Yes. During the treatment, a minimum distance of 2 metres must be maintained from persons with pacemakers and of 1 metre from electronic devices (e.g. mobile phones, credit cards, laptops).
